  • It would be easy to assume that being a member of the British royal family is always glamorous.

  • But royals also have their candid moments, from getting emotional in public to bad hair days.

  • These photos show what it’s really like to be a royal.

The royal family have cameras on them at all times, even during their most candid moments. Photographers captured King Charles and Camilla being startled by a bald eagle in 2015.

Cameras captured Princess Charlotte mid-sneeze at the Sussexes’ royal wedding in 2018.

People try to take selfies with the royals on a regular basis. For example, in 2014 this royal fan attempted to take a photo with the late Queen, who appeared unimpressed.

For King Charles, being royal means allowing strangers to kiss you when you least expect it.

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle couldn’t have a private conversation during Wimbledon without people noticing.

Some junior royals are all too aware of the waiting press. Princess Anne’s granddaughter, Savannah Phillips, stared at photographers while joking with Prince George during Trooping the Color 2018.

When you’re in the spotlight, tears don’t go unnoticed. The press captured photos of Charlotte crying during a trip to Germany in 2017.

Parenting can be difficult, especially when the world is watching. The press flooded the hospital after Kate gave birth to Prince George, on July 22, 2013.

Attending royal events with children can be challenging. Prince Louis covered his ears during a Trooping the Color flypast with the royal family in June 2022.

Royals have to follow strict dress codes. For example, Meghan had to remove her hat while seated in the Royal Box at Wimbledon in 2018.

Royal duties don’t stop for bad weather. Prince Harry once had to deliver a speech in the pouring rain during a visit to Australia in 2016.

The royal family has been known to use public transport on occasion. In March 1969, the Queen was photographed on the Victoria Line on the London Underground.

Sometimes, royal duties can be demanding. The late Queen planted trees on many occasions, including on a visit to Australia in 2006.

The royals are sometimes roped into performing in public. For example, Kate danced with Paddington Bear in 2019.
