The Rings of Power Just Answered A Decades Old The Lord of the Rings Question

This post contains spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Check out our review of this week’s episodetoo!

Since the very first time they shared the screen, the friendship between Elrond (Robert Amayo) and Durin IV (Owain Arthur) has been a highlight of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. It’s not just their chemistry and deep connection, but also the rare joy of seeing an Elf and Dwarf as comrades rather than enemies, as they have often been in Tolkien lore. In Episode 4 we saw that friendship became solidified as Durin shared his deepest secret with Elrond: the existence of Mithril. But just one episode later that priceless ore could be at the core of a massive betrayal. Except, as The Rings of Power shows us, the bond between Durin and Elrond is stronger than any potential conflict, and it leads to a huge moment that answers an even bigger question that has long lingered in the minds of The Lord of the Rings fans .

The Real Reason That Elrond Went to Khazad-dûm Revealed

While we know that Elrond does truly value his friendship with Durin, he hasn’t been honest about why he first returned to Khazad-dûm. It wasn’t simply to seek out his best friend, but to try and forge a union between the Elves and Dwarves to help Celebrimbor forge his next great creation. In his defense, Elrond has tried to convey this to Durin. But what nobody knew was that Elrond was manipulated by Celebrimbor and High King Gil-Galad. Both elves already knew about Mithril and wanted to confirm that the dwarves were able to mine it. It’s a massive revelation that shows the power and cynical smarts of the elder elves and the naivete and arrogance of Elrond. But he once again shows his personal growth and dedication to his relationship with Durin by telling him the truth instantly.

Thanks to their friendship and Durin’s deep generosity, we now know how the elves had access to mithril despite the substance only being found within Khazad-dûm.

What Do the Elves Want With Mithril?

Although we know that the Elves have processed Mithril and used it to create numerous things, Celebrimbor reveals to Elrond there’s a more drastic reason they need it. After Celebrimbor reveals that he was already aware of the ore, Elrond asks him if it could be the Elves’ salvation. “If we can secure vast quantities of it quickly enough to saturate every last elf in the light of the valor once more, then yes it very well could be,” the famed smith answers.

It is left to Elrond to break his oath and ask Durin for his help. Laying out the importance of the ore and how it could save the Elves, Elrond begs his friend for assistance. And Durin, pleased at the opportunity to hold the fate of every Elf in his hands, agrees. This is a huge moment, not just as we know that Celebrimbor will eventually use Mithril to forge one of the Rings of Power, but also as this fills a big gap in some classic Lord of the Rings lore.
